How to Study for NCEA Level 1 Maths (Without Just Re-Reading Your Book)

Maths is the subject where practice beats re-reading by the widest margin. Here's how to show working for the marks, the errors that cost the most, and a 4-week routine.

Most students who fail NCEA Level 1 Maths could already do the maths. They sat in class, they followed the teacher's worked example, they nodded. Then in the exam a question turned up in slightly different clothes and their brain returned nothing.

That's not a maths problem. It's a practice problem. Maths is the one subject where "I understood it when I watched it" is almost worthless, because the exam never asks you to watch. It asks you to produce.

This guide covers what the Level 1 externals actually look like, why retrieval practice pays off more in maths than anywhere else, how to write working that earns marks, the errors that quietly cost the most, and a 4-week routine you can start today.

What the Level 1 maths externals look like

The external exams sit in November and are marked by NZQA. The exact standards you sit depend on what your school has entered you for, so check with your teacher. But the externally assessed Level 1 maths papers broadly test three kinds of thinking:

  • Numeric reasoning. Percentages, ratios, rates, rounding sensibly, and applying all of that to a situation (a discount, a recipe, a phone plan, a trip).
  • Algebra. Simplifying, expanding, factorising, solving equations, and forming an equation from a word problem so you can solve it.
  • Statistical and probability-style thinking. Reading data, comparing groups, describing what a graph shows, and reasoning about chance in context.

The questions are usually set in a real-world scenario, and the grade you get depends on how far you can take it. Achieved questions ask you to apply a method. Merit questions ask you to connect two ideas or explain your reasoning. Excellence questions ask you to solve something with several steps and justify your answer in the context of the problem.

The one thing every level has in common: you get marks for what you write, not what you know. Which is why how you practise matters so much.

Why maths rewards retrieval more than any other subject

In English, you can sometimes bluff your way from memory of a discussion. In maths there's nowhere to hide. Either you can factorise the expression or you can't.

The research on this is unusually clear. Roediger and Karpicke's work on the testing effect showed that trying to retrieve something from memory strengthens it far more than reviewing it again. Dunlosky and colleagues' large review of study techniques rated practice testing and spaced practice as the two highest-utility methods, and rated re-reading and highlighting near the bottom. For maths, that means one thing: watching a worked example is not studying. Doing the problem yourself, cold, with the answer covered, and then checking it, is studying. The moment where you get stuck is the moment you're actually learning.

A useful test. Pick any question you did in class last week. Cover the answer. Can you do it right now, from a blank page? If not, you haven't learned it yet. You've only recognised it.

How to show working that earns marks

Every question in the exam is really two questions: can you get there, and can you show how you got there. If you write only the answer and it's wrong, you get nothing. If you write clear working and slip on the last line, you usually still get credit for the method.

Here's how to write working the way markers want to read it:

  1. Write the equation before the numbers. If you're using a formula or forming an equation from words, write it down first. That's evidence you know the method.
  2. One step per line. Don't do three operations in your head and write the result. Each line should follow obviously from the one above.
  3. Keep the units and the context. If the question is about money, the answer is in dollars. If it's about minutes, say minutes.
  4. Finish with a sentence. For any question set in a scenario, the last line should answer the actual question asked. "So the cheaper plan is Plan A for anyone who calls more than 150 minutes a month."
  5. Don't cross out working unless it's wrong. Markers can only credit what's on the page. If you attempt a question two ways, leave both and circle the one you're going with.

The five errors that cost the most marks

These are the ones that come up again and again, and none of them are about not knowing the maths.

1. No units, or the wrong units

A number on its own is not an answer to a question about money, distance or time. Write $102, not 102. Write 2.5 hours, not 2.5.

2. Rounding too early

Round only at the very end. Suppose a car worth $8,000 loses 12% of its value every year for 3 years. The correct working:

Value after 3 years = 8000 × 0.88³
0.88² = 0.7744
0.7744 × 0.88 = 0.681472
8000 × 0.681472 = 5451.776
Value ≈ $5,451.78

If you round 0.88³ to 0.68 before multiplying, you get $5,440. That's $11.78 off, and in a multi-step Excellence question the error compounds through every line after it.

3. Not answering in context

The question asks "Should Mia choose the monthly plan or the prepaid plan?" and the student writes "x = 150". That's a calculation, not an answer. Turn it into a sentence about Mia.

4. Skipping a question because the first line is hard

A blank question is a guaranteed zero. A question with a partial attempt often earns something. Write what you can: the formula, the first step, a diagram. If you're stuck, move on and come back, but never leave it empty.

5. Not checking the answer makes sense

If you work out that a T-shirt after a 20% discount costs more than it did before, you've made a sign error somewhere. Ten seconds of "does this make sense?" catches a surprising number of mistakes.

Two worked examples

Here's what full-marks working looks like on two typical question types.

Example A: solving an equation

Solve 3(x − 4) = 2x + 5.

3(x − 4) = 2x + 5
3x − 12 = 2x + 5        (expand the bracket)
3x − 2x = 5 + 12        (collect x on the left, numbers on the right)
x = 17

Check: left side 3(17 − 4) = 3 × 13 = 39. Right side 2(17) + 5 = 39. Both sides match, so x = 17.

Notice each line does exactly one thing, and the check at the end is what would catch a slip if there was one.

Example B: a rate problem in context

Plan A costs $45 a month with unlimited calls. Plan B costs $30 a month plus 10 cents per minute of calls. Aroha wants to know when Plan A becomes the cheaper option.

Let m = minutes of calls per month.
Cost of Plan B = 30 + 0.10m
Plan A is cheaper when Plan B costs more than $45:
30 + 0.10m > 45
0.10m > 15
m > 150

So Plan A is cheaper if Aroha makes more than 150 minutes of calls a month. If she calls less than 150 minutes, Plan B is cheaper, and at exactly 150 minutes they cost the same.

That last paragraph is the answer. The algebra is just how you got there.

A 4-week routine for Level 1 Maths

Week 1: find out what you can't do

  • Do one short practice paper, timed, with nothing open. Don't study first. The point is to get an honest picture.
  • Mark it properly. For each wrong question, write down why: didn't know the method, knew it but made an error, or ran out of time.
  • Sort your topics into three piles: solid, shaky, missing.

Week 2: attack the missing pile

  • Take the biggest "missing" topic. Read the method once. Then do five questions on it, cold, checking after each one.
  • Repeat with the next missing topic on alternate days.
  • Ten minutes at the end of each session: redo two questions from yesterday without looking. This is spaced repetition, and it's what stops the topic falling out of your head by Friday.

Week 3: turn shaky into solid

  • Same drill for the shaky pile, but now mix topics inside a session. The exam doesn't group questions by topic, so don't practise that way either.
  • Start writing full working for every question, even easy ones. You're building a habit, not just checking answers.

Week 4: rehearse the exam

  • Two full timed papers, one at the start of the week and one at the end. Mark both. See how to use past papers properly for how to get the most from them.

  • Last two days: no new content. Redo your worst five questions from the month, from a blank page.

If you follow this, you'll walk in having produced answers hundreds of times. That's the thing that actually transfers to the exam room.

Don't spend Week 4 re-reading your notes. It feels productive and it's almost the least useful thing you can do at that point. If you catch yourself reading instead of doing, close the book and pick a question.

What to do today

Pick one topic you're not sure about. Find three questions on it. Cover the answers and do them from scratch, writing every line of working. Then mark them honestly.

That's twenty minutes, and it's worth more than an hour with a highlighter.
